OTLEY & DISTRICT RIDING for the DISABLED GROUP

Meet The Team - Our Riders

OUR RIDERS

Our riders are people of all ages who have realised that riding a horse or pony is a very enjoyable way of living with and, in many ways, overcoming their physical and/or learning difficulties. Our youngest rider has only just started school: our oldest ones started school more than half a century ago.

These are some of the disabilities that they have.

  • Aspergers syndrome
  • auditory impairment
  • autism
  • cerebral palsy
  • Downs syndrome
  • epilepsy (when under control)
  • haemiplegia
  • heart problems
  • multiple sclerosis
  • muscular dystrophies
  • polio
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • stroke
  • visual impairment

Everyone who rides with us has provided medical documentation to say that they are likely to derive benefit from riding. We also have a consultant physiotherapist who can, if necessary, advise on individual needs.

Each rider is encouraged (but never coerced) to aim for attainable goals.

For some, it is a wonderful achievement to stay, with maximum help, on a moving pony for half an hour. Others gradually learn to control the pony for themselves and, if they wish, take part in competitions. (We are becoming a real force to be reckoned with at the RDA National Championship Finals held in Gloucestershire each July.) Our best rider represents Ireland at international level. One of our school groups follows an ASDAN programme which delivers the National Curriculum by means of (in our case) riding and horse knowledge. The main thing is that everyone should enjoy their riding experience.

I think I might like to try riding. What should I do?

If you think you, or someone in your care, might like to ride with us why not click on the 'Contact' button and get in touch? Or phone 0845 2416311. We will ask you to come round during a session so that you can meet everyone and have a look at a class in action. Then, if our facilities are suitable (We have a ramp but not a hoist and we do need to ensure we have a horse that will meet with your needs) we will ask you and your GP to fill in a form. You will be able to ride as soon as the completed form is returned to us. We charge a nominal membership fee and, though all rides are heavily subsidised, we do make a charge - currently most riders pay £8 per half hour group session.
